Bad Elf Flex: Configuring LTI TruPulse Rangefinders

The process outlined below demonstrates how to initially configure your laser rangefinder for connection
to your Bad Elf Flex. Be sure to perform all steps in italics both on the initial setup and prior to each use.

  • Ensure that the tilt sensor and magnetic compass (if included) are calibrated correctly by:

  • Calibrating Tilt Sensor: (Note: Calibration of tilt sensor is only necessary if the unit has experienced a shock or as part of troubleshooting process)

  1. Hold the down button on the rangefinder for four seconds until “UnitS” appears on the display

  2. Press down to display “inC” and press the “FIRE” button

  3. Press down so the display shows “(YES)(CAL)” and press fire.

  4. Place the rangefinder on a flat surface.

  5. Begin the first rotation on a flat surface facing right side up, and begin the second rotation lying on its right side. Rotate the rangefinder forward 90 degrees at a time, pressing “FIRE” at every orientation after waiting one second before and after each press.  In total, you’ll press the fire button eight times.

  6. If “PASS” appears, press the “Power/Fire” button to return.

  7. If “FAiLx” appears, retry the process and ensure you:

    1. Minimized motion during calibration by waiting one second before and after “Power/Fire” presses

    2. Removed local magnetic field sources

    3. Followed the correct orientation process

  • Calibrating Magnetic Compass (For optimum performance, complete an on-site Horizontal Angle Compass Calibration each time you change location or accessories or when “AZ” flashes.)

  • Perform outside away from magnetic field sources. This means during BOTH the operation and calibration of your rangefinder, maintain clearances of: 6 inches from small metal objects such as cell phones, metal glasses, zippers, and keys

  • 18 inches from moderately sized metal objects like data collectors, GPS antennas, and radios

  • 6 feet from any magnets or larger metal objects like fire hydrants, sewer caps, bicycles, road signs, and chain-link fences

  • 15 feet from electrical boxes, cars, powerlines, non-metal buildings

  • 30 feet from heavy machinery or metal buildings

  1. Hold the down button on the rangefinder for four seconds until “UnitS” appears on the display.

  2. Press down to display “H_Ang” and press the “FIRE” button.

  3. Press down so the display shows “HACAL” and press fire.

  4. Press down to select “(YES)(HACAL)”.

  5. Begin the first rotation (Steps #1-4) with the unit facing magnetic north-oriented right side up, and begin the second rotation (steps #5-8) lying on its right side but still pointed towards the magnetic north. Rotate the rangefinder forward 90 degrees at a time pressing “FIRE” at every orientation while holding the unit steady and waiting one second before and after each press.

    3. Replicated the correct orientation process

  • Always recalibrate your compass when (AZ) flashes.

  • If calibration fails repeatedly, perform the tilt calibration, then repeat the preceding steps.
