Integration: Configuring Esri Survey123 for ArcGIS

This article describes the process for configuring a Bad Elf receiver with Survey123 for ArcGIS. These instructions take you through a step-by-step process for connecting your Bad Elf receiver.

BLUETOOTH PAIRING

The first step in the process is to ensure your phone or tablet is paired with the Bad Elf receiver. From your Bluetooth settings page either pair or confirm that your phone or tablet is paired with your specific Bad Elf receiver.
  1. On your phone or tablet, go to the Settings function and select Bluetooth
  2. Find your Bad Elf receiver by serial number
  3. Tap the entry to pair
  4. For the Bad Elf GPS Pro, GPS Pro+, and GNSS Surveyor, press the bottom button on the receiver
  5. For the Bad Elf Flex, press the enter button (button with a circle) on the receiver
  6. If prompted on your phone or tablet, click on Accept to complete the pairing process

Configuring Esri Survey123 for ArcGIS

The next step in the process is to configure your Bad Elf receiver to work directly with Survey123 for ArcGIS. You only need to complete this process once, unless you are using a different Bad Elf receiver.

  1. Start Survey123 for ArcGIS
  2. On the main screen of Survey123 for ArcGIS, look for the menu icon in the upper right. Click this icon.

  3. Click on the option Settings.

  1. A settings screen appears similar to one shown below. Click on the option Location.
  2. Survey123 for ArcGIS provides a list of connected GPS sources. The list shows configured receivers. If your Bad Elf receiver is not on the list, click on the option Via Bluetooth.

  1. On the Add Provider screen confirm that External receiver is selected as well as Bluetooth, then toggle ON Discover. Since you have already paired your Bad Elf receiver with your phone or tablet, any available GPS receivers are shown in the list at the bottom.

  1. Click on the item in the list that represents your Bad Elf receiver.
  2. Enter a value for the option Antenna Height.
For the Bad Elf GPS Pro, GPS Pro+, and GNSS Surveyor, enter 0 unless you are mounting the receiver on a pole. For the Bad Elf Flex, the ARP (antenna reference point) is 23cm above the base. If mounting on a 2 meter pole, enter 2.23m or 7.316ft.
  1. Tap on the back arrow to exit this screen.
  2. When you return to the Location menu, it will now show the Bad Elf receiver. Ensure your Bad Elf receiver is in the list and is connected. If not, click on your Bad Elf receiver in the list to activate it.
  3. You may now return to the main menu of Survey123 for ArcGIS and begin data collection. All location data delivered to Survey123 for ArcGIS comes from your Bad Elf receiver.
Note: When collecting data, Survey123 for ArcGIS alerts you to any loss of connection between your Bad Elf receiver and the phone or tablet.

Note: Screen layout and display content may vary between iOS and Android.
